Surf Life Saving New Zealand, (SLSNZ) this week announced a grant of $421,000 towards the United North Piha Lifeguard Service (UNPLS) rebuild project, for the current financial year.
This grant has been made possible as a result of the 2020 Government Budget allocation of $9.3 mill per annum for surf lifesaving across NZ, of which $2.75 mill per annum us targeted for the replacement of lifeguarding facilities.
SLSNZ have identified the North Piha projects for a further grant from the government fund in the 2021/22 financial year.
The current funding will allow enabling works to commence immediately following the patrol season and for the new tower to be operational in time for the 2021/22 patrol season, when the new clubhouse is expected to be still under construction.
The Club acknowledges the support of the TSB Bank and 4 North Piha property owners who contributed the seed funding which allowed the consenting and initial design stages of the tower to proceed. Also Hynds Pipe Systems, for the specialist engineering support they provided our designers. Thanks for your vision and support
With this announced SLSNZ grant, the club has raised just short of $3 mill of the total $4.3 mill projected construction cost. This is made up by; Council Development Funding Agreement to $1.359 mill, SLSNZ Grant $421k, Foundation North Grant $400k, Grassroots Trust Grant $200k and club reserves and generous local community support of $600k.
A requirement of the Development Funding Agreement is that we need to also raise a 10% contingency over the estimated construction cost plus a further $300k costs over run sum, as a result of other historic projects with which the council has been involved.
The additional SLSNZ grant will be subject to the Club’s volunteers being successful with their funding applications to the likes of Lotteries NZ, The Trusts and other funders.
Similarly the Club will also be seeking donated construction materials and products from the business community and public donations, so that the project is fully funded prior to planned clubhouse construction kick off, in the 2nd half of 2021.
