Opening today 6 April were some big bold canvases from landscape artist and local woman, Jill Perrott.
With her title of “Toast the West Coast” Jill’s landscapes featured the West Coast from Muriwai to the South Head of the Awhitu Peninsula, and in between – Anawhata, Te Henga, Whatipu, Karekare, Piha and North Piha.
Jill’s colour palette is sombre, with greys, sludgy blues and greens predominating, with slashes of bright white and silvery hues. She captures the coast in big sweeping gestures, and sometimes thickly layered paint, but captures the essence of familiar landscapes. The water slicked reflective sands are well exploited in her works.
I particularly liked the large landscape looking inland at North Piha from the sea’s edge (see below), the Awhitu landscape and the small Whatipu painting, part of a six-part work.
Prices are very reasonable so go down and take a look.
