The Auckland Council responded to a lengthy consultation on freedom camping by extending prohibitions on specific sites, including a number of Piha roads and one at Karekare.
Freedom camping is already prohibited on any parks held under the Reserves Act and all regional parks. To those has been added
- Glen Esk Road, east end
- North Piha Strand/Marine Parade North
- South Piha Strand/Marine Parade South
- Piha wetland and Seaview Road around the site
- Karekare carpark
