With the secret development of radar, WW2 was the first high-tech war the world had known and radar gave the Allies the edge. Piha’s air force COL radar station was one of a coastal network that searched the skies for enemy planes, the seas for submarines, and vectored friendly aircraft coming out of the Pacific. Based on her new book, Sandra Coney tells the untold story about a city under threat and how radar protected it. It is also the story of some startling discoveries that are internationally credited with laying the foundations of the science of radio astronomy
