Here’s the message from Sustainable Coatslines folk
For the second year running we are hosting a coastal clean-up at Piha as part of the New Zealand Surfing Nationals on Saturday the 21st of January at the competition base in South Piha.
Piha is a stunning West Coast beach that receives heavy weather from the Sou-west. This brings in massive swells for surfing and also marine debris from international sources, so despite the fact that passionate locals clean-up the beach regularly, we will find small pieces of washed-up oceanic rubbish. This is what our volunteers will be targeting and we look forward to auditing the results so that we can learn more about where such rubbish comes from.
Meet for clean-up between midday and 5pm – all equipment provided as well as prizes and free Whittakers chocolate for all. Come down and help to look after this beautiful beach while watching our best surfers battle it out in solid West Coast waves.
