Not Piha, but the dune-impounded lake at Tunnel Point, taken yesterday 3 January 2012. This is a magic place, reached by walking south along Karekare Beach. You follow the tramway’s old route, with the benched track and tunnel which was made to allow the engine (with collapsible funnel) through. The wetlands are a kaleidoscope of coloured grasses and aquatic plants and there are shags in residence.
