This curious sign in Beach Valley Road (just above the Razza) is designed to warn people that just up the road is a low-hanging pohutukawa branch. Of course it has been at Piha an awfully long time and is successfully driven under or around by rubbish trucks, fire engines and other taller-than-normal vehicles.
But apparently it is breaking the height rule, and Auckland Transport, which seems to either have too big a budget or be intent on domesticating Piha, was planning to give it the chop. This would have had a serious effect on the pohutukawa canopy in Beach Valley Road.
Fortunately, after a discussion with Parks, it was agreed the branch could stay, but the quid pro quo was this sign.
