Hulena Architects Ltd. has been appointed to undertake the design and project manage the construction of the proposed new structure for co-location of the Piha Bowling and Tennis Clubs. Brent Hulena, the firm’s principal, has owned a property at Piha for the last 8 years and has designed several residential projects at Piha. His firm has designed similar projects to the PCSR clubhouse, including the Sprig Bar and Functions Lounge at the Remuera Golf Course and a beach community recreation facility and clubhouse for Moore’s Bay, Kawau Island.
A public request for architectural services resulted in 7 submissions being received. These were narrowed to a shortlist of 3, each of whom made presentations to the Steering Committee. Larry Gibson, who co-chairs the Steering Committee, said that very high quality proposals had been received which made for a difficult choice.
The next phase will be to produce design documentation so that a resource consent application can be lodged. The Steering Committee has specified that the design will need to reflect the Domain’s unique features and environment in a sustainable way.
Once resource consent has been granted the Steering Committee will consider a range of funding options, in consultation with the Auckland Council, the Waitakere Ranges Local Board and philanthropic funding agencies.
The new structure will not only serve the combined 400 plus membership of the two clubs but provide modern recreational facilities for the Piha and Karekare communities.
