We are told by Barbara Cade, events manager for Waitakere in the Auckland Council, that this year’s Thundercats will be the last. You will recall many protests about the first time this event was held at North Piha.

In that light here’s a message from the organisers.

Good morning all

Just a courtesy email to advise that the Thundercat racing event for Piha this year is to be held on Saturday February 19 in the same location at Mid Beach.

The format will be the same as in previous years with beach setup commencing from 9am, racing from 11am until 3pm and packdown completed by 5pm. Competitor numbers this year are down to 17 boats, we have the required Auckland Council consents and will have St John Ambulance in attendance as well as our own safety marshals and safety boats. We would welcome you down to Mid Beach to view this exciting spectacle.
